The last of the Sheva Minim for Tu BiShvat
In Shir Hashirim, H'shem compares us to the date palm: "Komatech damtah l'tamar."
Why the tamar?
Because nothing on this tree goes to waste.
The dates are food. The branches become our lulav. The fronds give shade. The trunk is used for building. Every single part has a purpose. That's Am Yisrael. Each of us has our role, our contribution. Some provide sweetness, some give structure, some offer protection. We all matter.
When the Torah describes Eretz Yisrael flowing with milk and honey, our sages explain that "honey" means date honey - the real sweetness of the land. Dates give us quick energy, natural fuel for the work ahead.
On Rosh Hashanah, we say when we eat dates, "She-yitamu oyveinu"
The date palm teaches us to stand tall and strong, even when it takes years to see fruit.
The Baal Shem Tov had a minhag to say Perek Shira on Tu BiShvat the tefilah that explains how everything in creation sings Shira to H'shem
This Tu BiShvat, remember: like the tamar, every part of who you are serves a purpose in H'shem's plan.
